FORT LAUDERDALE, FL -- On July 24, 2012, Stonewall National Museum & Archives premiers their latest exhibition, WINNERS: Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Athletics in America. The exhibit celebrates the historical and cultural importance of LGBT athletes and their allies by profiling athletes such as Billy Jean King and Greg Louganis among others.  Martina Navratilova's tennis racquet and Billy Bean's baseball mitt will also be on display. Winners is generously sponsored by Comcast/NBC Universal with additional support from Bitner Goodman, Sidelines Sports Bar, Gibson Group, Push Fitness, Broward Cultural Division, Florida Cultural Division and the National Endowment for the Arts' Blue Star Museums.

Sidelines Sports Bar, South Florida's premier gay sports bar, has generously loaned some of their prized sports artifacts to illustrate the growth of local gay athletic groups.

"Stonewall has rightfully chosen to showcase the many athletes and sporting groups who came before us in the struggle to gain acceptance," commented Laurie Whittaker, owner of Sidelines Sports Bar. "It is because of these competitors that we enjoy a growing popularity in all sports."

The opening reception for WINNERS will be at Stonewall National Museum & Archives on July 24, 2012, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM.  This event is free and open to the public. Patrons are encouraged to wear their favorite sports jersey to the reception. After the reception, the attendees are invited back to Sidelines Sports Bar for a free well drink or draft beer.

Stonewall National Museum and Archives is located at 1300 East Sunrise Boulevard, Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Sidelines Sports Bar is located at 2031-A Wilton Drive, Wilton Manors, Florida, 33305.

Chronicling gay history, one book and artifact at a time

Meeker

Bryan W. Knicely is president of the Stonewall National Museum & Archives of Fort Lauderdale. They recently changed their name from The Stonewall Library to The Stonewall National Museum & Archives to reflect the mission of being the Smithsonian of the LGBT community. (Sarah Dussault, Sun Sentinel / March 12, 2012)

By Johnny Diaz, Sun Sentinel

FORT LAUDERDALE —

At the Stonewall National Museum & Archives, gay history is bursting at the seams.

There's the tennis racket signed by Martina Navratilova. News clippings of former beauty queen and gay rights opponent Anita Bryant. The gavel that hammered the repeal of the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" military policy against gays and lesbians last year.

Even as libraries are shrinking and many bookstores are closing because of the Web, this repository has outgrown its shelf space since moving into its home on East Sunrise Boulevard three years ago.

"It's a good sign. It's a sign of the vibrance of this movement,'' said U.S. Congressman Barney Frank, D-Mass., who visits Fort Lauderdale twice a year with his partner and recently loaned the gavel. "This is a very important cause to document."

With 25,000 books and videos, Stonewall is the largest circulating library of gay literature and periodicals and one of at least a handful nationally. It changed its name last year, from the Stonewall Library & Archives, to reflect a more national focus with its collection and traveling exhibitions. The organization's advertising boasts that it's "the LGBT community's Smithsonian."

"We are this national treasure of stuff and we needed to have a name that reflects that,'' said Bryan Knicely president of the nonprofit Stonewall, which has about 7,000 items in its archives, representing 8,000 linear feet or about 1 1/2 miles of materials.

But the center also houses slices of old gay South Florida. Remember the outdoor sign of the former Marlin Beach Hotel, a popular beach spot for Fort Lauderdale gays? That sign bedecks the entrance of the library's conference room. The hotel's original blueprints are also part of the archive.

"If someone doesn't collect or preserve this, it's one of those things that gets thrown away,'' Knicely said.

As he stood inside the archive recently, Knicely was dwarfed by 16 towering rows of shelving racks packed with everything from gay pulp fiction novels from the 1950s to event buttons such as one from the 1982 Gay Games in San Francisco. Sealed plastic bags display jerseys from local and national gay sports leagues.

"When you are part of a community like the LGBT community, unless you know what has happened before you and what rights you have been fighting for, you really have no sense of place in your community,'' he said. "So that's why it's important to preserve this so the story can always be told."

The archive is part of that story. The library got its start in 1973 when Mark Silber, a 19-year-old student at Florida Atlantic University, began collecting gay books and magazines to better understand his homosexuality.

The collection "was a lending library among friends that grew and grew,'' said John Coppola, a Miami-based consultant for museums in Latin America and former head of exhibits at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.

"I remember when the library was in a closet,'' said Fred Fejes, a communications professor at FAU. "It was a real band of very loyal archivists that kept this going on for a long time."

The library eventually found a home at the former Gay and Lesbian Community Center on Andrews Avenue.

But the collection wasn't always embraced.

In 2007, then-Fort Lauderdale Mayor Jim Naugle objected to the library moving to a city-owned building, citing concerns over some pornographic material in a space at the ArtServe center next to Holiday Park, where children played.

Naugle lost the fight, and Stonewall officially relocated to its new home in 2009, with local officials including Broward County Sheriff Al Lamberti on hand to celebrate.

Back then, only a third of its shelves were full and the archive's shelving racks were bare.

These days, the library is so full that new additions top bookshelves. And the archive section is at 95 percent capacity.

Stonewall receives about 200 new and used books each year from snowbirds and local residents. Donated goods vary in size. One recent donation: 30 boxes of music videos that played at the former Cathode Ray bar on Las Olas Boulevard. And autographed sheet music by the writers of the Broadway musical "Hairspray."

Stonewall Names Archives in Honor of Paul Fasana and Robert S. Graham

Stonewall National Museum & Archives (SNMA) has named its archives in perpetual honor of Paul Fasana and Robert S. Graham. Together as a couple for 47 years, both men generously donated their financial support and personal involvement for the success of the library and archives. "We are extremely proud to name the archives after both Paul and Robert," stated Bryan W. Knicely, Stonewall's president. "It is an honor to work with Paul, and we wanted to show our appreciation for his long-term service and continued dedication." Fasana currently serves as Stonewall's chief archivist, and has overseen the accumulation and documentation of thousands of books and artifacts, as well as the work of archival volunteers. Graham died in 2009 at the age of 90. Recently, Fasana established a Fund in the couple's name at Our Fund for the ongoing financial support of SNMA.

The results will be shared with the LGBT community and will be used to address the issues raised, develop programs and advocate for government and private sector funding.

Our Fund will be distributing a postcard promoting the survey in the coming weeks. Our Fund will also distribute to LGBT friendly businesses, and provide the link in social media networks. LGBT press and local blogs will also be asked to promote this survey during the next several weeks. Working

The revamped, updated, and contemporized musical WORKING features the music of Tony winners Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Godspell), Lin-Manuel Miranda (In the Heights) and Grammy winner James Taylor. The original source material for this unabashedly American musical is based on the original novel WORKING by Studs Terkel.

"WORKING has a structure similar to A Chorus Line in that we really dive inside the mindset of these characters," said Clive Cholerton, Artistic Director. "What we also see is just how interconnected we all are and how shared all of our experiences are. Its themes are possibly the most universal of any show we've done recently at Caldwell Theatre Company."

WORKING encompasses the hopes, dreams, joys and concerns of the average working American. In the course of one 24-hour workday, the audience meets and hears stories of various workers including the Fireman, Teacher, Money Managers, Homemakers/stay-at-home mom, Retirees and more. A musical exploration of 26 people from all walks of life, WORKING celebrates everyday people in a genuinely funny and touching way. WORKING fills you with hope and inspiration and is the perfect musical for everyone who has ever worked a day in their lives. An all-Florida cast embodies this eclectic mix of monologues and songs featuring Broadway vets Melissa Minyard (Les Miserables), Barry Tarallo (Grease), South Florida favorites, Jim Ballard (All My Sons, Urinetown, Adding Machine), Laura Hodos (She Loves Me), Kareema Khouri (Motherhood the Musical) and Michael Focas (Lend Me a Tenor). Musical Direction is in the capable hands of Caryl Fantel, whose previous work at Caldwell includes the powerhouse show Vices: A Love Story and the Broadway Concert A Secret Garden.

Through our collections, programs and services, Stonewall National Museum & Archives documents, explores and honors the LGBT past while striving to inform, inspire and engage this and the next generation of our community's leaders.

Thank You,
You Help Make Stonewall A Huge Success!

Your support of Stonewall National Museum & Archives is absolutely essential to our success in preserving our lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) history and educating today's youth about our history.

We have had an extraordinary year. We have celebrated many accomplishments and changes as we have focused on becoming more relevant to the education for a broader audience of our nation's youth on LGBT issues and history.

With 19 major traveling educational exhibits, we continue to produce more to meet the demands and issues facing the LGBT community and our youth. Our Archive is 95% full of historic documents and artifacts, and we continue to collect more. Our Library added over 200 new titles this year, and Stonewall has further reached out to the community with more activities and events to present new programs on LGBT historic issues.

Your continued support will enable Stonewall to further develop our Education Services programs that teach the nation's youth about the heroes, historic events, contributions and "Stars" of the LGBT community. Our goal is to build LGBT youth self-esteem and to teach the nation's youth more tolerance and understanding of the LGBT community.

Together, with your help, we can achieve great things. I hope you will share this message on our progress at Stonewall. Please consider making an online, tax-deductible contribution to support our LGBT history at http://tinyurl.com/7ejjpq2.

Thank you for your interest and generosity.

Most sincerely,

Bryan W. Knicely
President

Brian McNaught Presented with Selisse Berry Leadership Award

Brian McNaught
"Outie" will be presented at the
2011 Out & Equal Workplace Summit

Out & Equal Workplace Advocates, the leading nonprofit organization committed to ending workplace discrimination for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) employees, announced today that Brian McNaught, the world's leading corporate diversity consultant dealing with LGBT issues in the workplace, is the recipient of the Selisse Berry Leadership Award.

The award, named in honor of Out & Equal's Founding Executive Director, Selisse Berry, will be presented to McNaught at the 2011 Out & Equal Workplace Summit  on Thursday, October 27, 2011.

The Out & Equal Workplace Summit, taking place in Dallas, Texas from October 25-28, is the largest conference dedicated solely to LGBT workplace equality. The event draws close to 3,000 participants from 25 countries, including executives, human resource professionals, employee resource groups and individuals.

The Selisse Berry Leadership Award recognizes an exceptional individual whose visionary leadership, tireless efforts and remarkable accomplishments have been a critical contribution toward achieving LGBT workplace equality. In addition to leading change in the world of employment, this leader inspires countless individuals to champion the cause which is our vision: workplace equality for all inclusive of sexual orientation, gender identity, expression or characteristics.

"Brian McNaught has been working to help people to better understand the unique challenges and opportunities faced by LGBT people in the workplace since 1974," said Kayla Shell, President of the Board of Directors at Out & Equal Workplace Advocates. "His work has reached hundreds of professional and university audiences and has been pivotal to changing how the corporate world views the LGBT community. We are proud to be able to honor him with this award."

"I am so pleased that Brian McNaught is being honored with this award," said Selisse Berry, Founding Executive Director of Out & Equal Workplace Advocates. "His work has been important, ground-breaking and invaluable.  I am proud to consider him a peer and a friend."

Several members of the LGBT business community shared their endorsement:

"What Brian does better than anyone else on the planet, it is that he can help people not only embrace appropriate and respectful language when discussing things related to LGBT issues and community, but he consistently enrolls people as true allies who are committed to making a difference." - Deborah Dagit, VP and Chief Diversity Officer, Merck

"Simply put, in my view, we all stand on Brian McNaught's shoulders since he has personally crusaded this important work now for nearly 40 years, "said Bob Witeck, CEO, Witeck-Combs Communications, Inc. "It is no surprise the New York Times referred to him long ago as the 'godfather of gay sensitivity training.'"

 Cool Limbo            Michael Montlack

Michael Montlack is joined by

Maureen Seaton and Neil de la Flor

to celebrate his first collection of poetry, Cool Limbo

On Saturday, October 15th, 1:30 - 3:00 PM, Stonewall National Museum & Archives welcomes Michael Montlack and his two amazing friends, Maureen Seaton and Neil de la Flor to read from their poetry collections and showcase Cool Limbo, Mr. Montlack's latest release.

Cool Limbo navigates a lavish parade of constantly shifting sexual codes, zeroing in with wit and precision on such topics as the pursuit of beauty, the lure of indifference, the gaudy charm of the suburbs and mortality. Even the somber pieces maintain a tone that celebrates subversive pleasure.

In addition to being the editor of the non-fiction anthology My Diva: 65 Gay Men on the Women Who Inspire Them (University of Wisconsin Press, 2009), which was nominated for a Lambda Literary Award, Montlack is the author of three poetry chapbooks: Cover Charge (Winner of the 2007 Gertrude Chapbook Competition); Girls, Girls, Girls (Pudding House, 2008); and The Slip (Poets Wear Prada, 2009).

Maureen Seaton has authored fourteen poetry collections, both solo and collaborative - most recently, Cave of the Yellow Volkswagen (Carnegie Mellon, 2009); Stealth, with Sam Ace (Chax Press, 2011); and Sinéad O'Connor and Her Coat of a Thousand Bluebirds, with Neil de la Flor (Firewheel, Sentence Book Award, 2011).  A memoir, Sex Talks to Girls (University of Wisconsin Press, 2008), won the Lambda Literary Award, and her poetry has received numerous honors including the Lammy, the Audre Lorde Award, the Iowa Poetry Prize and the Pushcart.

Robert Hofmann
to present new book at
Stonewall National Museum & Archives

Robert Hofmann, author and humorist, comes to Stonewall National Museum & Archives, Tuesday, October 11, 2011, 7PM.

Robert Hofmann grew up in New Jersey and what a wild, crazy and wonderful life he has had. Between his family and his friends, he guides the reader through many exciting episodes of his life. It is wickedly bitchy and hilarious! Everyone in Robert's life so far is a participant in his wonderfully funny and provocative stories of his life.

His first two books, An Ordinary Madness, and Surrounded by Insanity expressed his unique style of humor that will have you laughing and just "knowing" the people he is talking about.

In his newest book, we are taken on yet another wild ride into Robert Hofmann's hilarious world. Hofmann doesn't mind telling on himself either. He tells tales about himself as well as others. In his latest memoir he devotes one chapter about the loss of his dear mother which we can all relate to.

Other chapters are devoted to trailer trash, hot in leather, love and loss and other chapters dealing with parties, friends and "not so close friends," making fun of others as well as himself and just great reading.

Stonewall welcomes author
April Claxton
on Saturday, June 11 at 1:00 PM
Goodnight Just The Same author April Claxton
to present at Stonewall
Good Night Just The Same            April Claxton

On Saturday, June 11 at 1PM, The Stonewall National Museum & Archives welcomes April Claxton to its Distinguished Author Series to talk about her recently published book, Goodnight Just The Same.

April Claxton is the author of 3 books, The Movement Within: 8 Steps To Ignite The Movement Within You, The Power of Self Love: A Mini Book and the highly praised children's book Goodnight Just The Same, as well as many inspirational messages available on The Movement Within Facebook page. Through writing, one of her biggest passions, April encourages, inspires and motivates adults and children to discover their value and necessity of Self. She enjoys speaking to adults but her heart truly opens with her younger audiences. As a victim of childhood emotional and physical abuse, Claxton strongly believes in and promotes the power and necessity of positivity within a child's life.

Goodnight Just The Same is a book whose time had come to be written.  There are families across the globe that no longer fit the "normal" stereotype of what a family is. This book teaches us that every family structure is "normal." We have step-mommies and step-daddies. We have no mommies and no daddies. We also have two mommies and two daddies. Some of us only have one mommy, daddy or grandparent to raise us. No matter what the structure of your family is, it is important to note that a family is a family as long as it comes from love. It is about the feelings we feel when we go to sleep so that we have better feelings when we awake. To the moon every family is tucked in "just the same." Critics have stated, "It will help any child of any age go to bed and wake up feeling like they're loved."

Stonewall National Museum & Archives is located at 1300 East Sunrise Boulevard, Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33304. Ms Claxton's presentation on Saturday, June 11 @ 1PM is free and open to the public. Families are welcome. For further information please call 954-763-8565 or visit www.stonewallnationalmuseum.org.
